The big post of things about hands!!!
I don’t consider myself qualified to teach art at this point in my life, but I don’t see any harm in sharing observations I have made. In learning to draw hands over the past few months I’ve tried to take a lot of notes, with the end goal of hopefully creating a video tutorial one day. I personally learn better from videos than written or illustrated instructions, but I’ve never found any one video that really demystifies drawing hands.
I believe that in order to tackle such a difficult subject it is important to understand what makes it difficult, and this is not often addressed. If you understand the problems you can systematically solve them…
- Drawing the hand is almost like drawing a whole person. Similar number of “major masses” and a big range of motion.
- Because the hand is so versatile, it’s hard to pick a pose when practicing. Most individual body parts are drawn from different angles, whereas the hand must be drawn from different angles and in different poses.
- Hands have a lot of moving parts and from any given angle many of these will be partially or wholly obscured by other parts. Drawing “through the form” results in confusing construction lines that are difficult to interpret.
- Hands are expressive and give big clues as to what a character is doing. Odd or unnatural hand poses detract heavily from your overall piece. Most people avoid drawing hands because of this.
- The thumb flexes along a different plane than the four fingers and sits on its own deviant metacarpal. Drawing the hand in perspective is hard enough, but adding the thumb in relation to the rest of the hand at a convincing angle? Forget about it!
- Hands are typically simplified into box and cylinder forms, but almost every part of the hand is a combination of angles and curves. No one simplified form really describes these parts.
- Hands interact with other objects, like all the time. They’re tricky enough to draw on their own… this isn’t helping anyone.
- Hands have a lot of bony landmarks, veins, and tendons, all visible at the surface level. These are obstacles when trying to render them realistically.
- Hands are asymmetrical from every angle. Every part, every time.
I think that about covers the major issues we face when trying to draw hands. Now here are some observations and facts that you can use to fight back!
- The width of the first three fingers (index, middle and ring) is the same as the width of the wrist. The pinky and thumb both emanate from the parts of the palm that overhang this line.
- The palm of the hand is more of a pentagon than a rectangle (Thanks, Jim Lee!).
- The length of the middle finger is approximately the same as the length and width of the palm.
- The length of the phalanxes (finger bones in this case) diminishes in size as they get further from the palm. The second (middle) phalanx is 2/3 the length of the first (proximal), and the third (distal) is 2/3 the length of the second. You don’t really notice this since the first knuckle is “inside” the palm and we tend to think of the fingers as starting at the “finger crotch”.
- The thumb has no middle phalanx, only a proximal and a distal one.
- The thumb is rotated 90 degrees from the angle of the four fingers. So the fingernails point “up” and the thumbnail points “to the side”. This obviously changes depending on the pose, but the thumbnail never really points “up” with the other fingernails unless it is bent backwards, as in poses when all five fingers are pressed against a flat surface. It never really points “down” unless the hand is clamping or pinching… or operating a sock puppet.
- The thumb has to sit lower than the palm so that it can flex underneath the hand. The first knuckle of the thumb is almost as far below the index finger as the pinky is far away from the index finger.
- The “webbing” of the thumb connects exactly half way up the palm.
- Hands are asymmetrical from every angle. Every part, every time.
That is all the knowledge I have so far, and now you have it too! I don’t think any tutorial, video or otherwise, can ever teach you as much as the thousand observations you will make from drawing a thousand hands. There is no substitute for practice. So practice by looking at your hand from the normal vantage point, and from a mirror. Practice from 3D reference like the Handy Art Tool. Practice by copying other artists and animators whose hands appeal to you. Most of all, practice from imagination.
PRACTICE!

Japanese lesson: Crying
えーんえーん (een een) – loud crying of a child
おぎゃあおぎゃあ (ogyaa ogyaa) – crying of a little baby
しくしく (shiku shiku) – quiet crying
あーんあーん (aan aan) – wailing
めそめそ (meso meso) – uncontrolled weeping
おいおい (oi oi) – loud crying of a manly man
Isn’t it nice how people twist their religious scripture to suit their weds but when it’s used against them it’s suddenly not okay
I talked to a monk about this quote once (we have mutual friends, and he came to a New Year’s Eve party at my shared art studio). He said this isn’t even talking about homosexuality. That the bible never actually says homosexuality is wrong. What that passage means is this:
Women were treated as subservient and it that you shouldn’t treat other men as subservient, like they are beneath you. It is not talking about homosexuality. If it was, it would say it outright since the bible lists other things outright.
I take the word of a monk who have studied the bible extensively more than a self proclaimed Christian.
The above text, I would like to point out is from the point of view of this translation of the original Hebrew. I spoke with my cousin’s rabbi on the matter and his response was different, saying that it was a mistranslation. See, the true translation says that a man shall not lie with another in the bed of a woman, which is to say, the Hebrews had a shit ton of rules about when a man was or was not allowed in a woman’s bed and private quarters (including, if she didn’t want you there, you weren’t allowed there. Hebrew women were also allowed to divorce their husbands and the image of the ‘oppressive Hebrew people’ is an image that was propogated by Christianity which, historically speaking, doesn’t treat the Jewish people too well and liked to paint them as being rather barbaric and backwards and cultish with their traditions, which, another piece of fun info, their traditions were one of the main reasons why the Jewish people were less likely, in medieval times, to die of the plague. Because washing your hands and avoiding the dead and vermin and the like was a lot of help. Of course the Christians persecuted them for not dying but that’s another matter. I’m sidetracked). So the verse is literally saying ‘Don’t fuck in some lady’s bed because that’s just goddamn rude’
Also, whenever a Christian brings the book of Leviticus up, you should feel free to point out that these are rules that were given to make the Hebrew people prepared for when the son of God came to earth. In Christianity, it’s believed the son of God was Jesus. So by following the rules set in Leviticus or pushing them as things we should follow, they’re saying that Jesus was not the son of God, and that Jesus did not, in fact, die for our sins. Jewish people believe, in their faith, that the son of God hasn’t yet been born, so many choose to follow these rules.
Most people of course roll their eyes when I explain the translation of the verse (full breakdown found here) but it’s always fun to point out the nature of the rules in Leviticus and the implications of following them.
I’m a theology student and I am on the verge of crying because of how accurate this commentary is. Historical context is simultaneously the most interesting and most important part of interpreting any texts.
Most religious people seem to base their beliefs on things that are severely mistranslated. I wish they would do their research before using the bible for hate.
I studied theology extensively and was going to become a theologist until I switched majors. The above commentary is 100% accurate and what I try to stress in a lot if conversations with Bible Thumpers.
Jesus also affirms the homosexual relationship between the Roman Centurion and his “slave”. The particular Greek word used to refer to this special slave was “pais”. Greek language studies and contexts show that a “pais” was a male love slave. Regular slaves were called “dolos”. The Centurion makes this distinction clearly when he asks Jesus to heal his slave (pais), and then to prove his status he tells Jesus that his slaves (dolos) go when he tells them to. But this slave (pais) was special. He was the Centurion’s lover.
Hearing this, Jesus was so amazed he says he had not found ANYONE ELSE who had such great faith. He then blesses the Centurion and heals his male lover.
Matthew 8:5-13
THIS IS WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY TEACHES ABOUT SAME SEX COUPLES.
In short, the English adaptation is a mistranslated farce.

EXCUSE ME WHILE I REBLOG THIS FIFTY MILLION TIMES
This gets to go on my main blog because this is the most concise explanation of the mistranslation I have ever read and ALL OF YOU SHOULD READ ALL OF IT.
grammar tips.
- “In spite of” and “despite” are interchangeable, but “despite” can be regarded as more formal.
- “Than” implies comparison. “Then” refers to time. “My dog is bigger than yours. I’m going to the groomer and then I’m going to the store.”
- Don’t abuse synonyms.
- “Who” and “whom” are used differently.
- Example: “To whom does this backpack belong to?” vs “Who lost their backpack?”
- In reference to The Oatmeal, ‘answer your own question by using he or him.’ If the answer is ‘he’ then use ‘who.’ If the answer is ‘him’ = whom.
- Who is subject. Whom is object. The subject is doing something and the object is having something done to them. [x]
- Don’t be needlessly flowery. We don’t need two paragraphs devoted to what your character was wearing or on the scenery. But if you and your partner are well aware that you’re being flowery and just prefer it that way, then go ahead.
- Don’t use commas, that aren’t, necessary.
- Indicative vs. Subjunctive. “His toes were curled” and “Her hand was warm.” Feet is plural and hand is singular.
- “I couldn’t care less.”
- Loose and lose are different. When your character dies in a videogame, you lose. When your clothes are too big for you, they are loose. If your team lost your soccer game, you wouldn’t tell your mom, “We loost.”
- Its = possession. It’s = it is.
- Lets vs. Let’s.
- “My mom never lets me use the car.”
- “Let’s go shopping.”
- Neither and nor. They’re best friends. Don’t separate them, you monster.
- You write good or you write well?
- Everyone loves formatting things, that’s understandable. I format things too. But it isn’t an excuse to break the rules of grammar.
- Accept versus except. Come on. You accept an award. You love all animals except snakes. Accept is to receive and except is to leave out.
- Lay/lie/laid. I still get confused with this one. Honestly, if you mess this up, virtually everyone does. Here’s a helpful image. [x]
- For all intents and purposes. Intentions and purposes. Not intensive.
- Supposedly, not supposably.
- DEFINITELY, not defiantly, unless your character is defying something. “He is definitely upset with me. He spoke defiantly about his displeasure.”
- “You ‘bear’ weight with your ‘bare’ hands.” [x]
- “A lot” is two words.
- “[Person] and I” vs “[Person] and me.” Remove the additional pronoun and see what makes sense.
- “Mary and I went for coffee.” Right. “Mary and me went for coffee.” Wrong. You wouldn’t say “Me went for coffee.” Oog oog.
- This picture sums it up.
- “Too” is not the same as “to.”
- “I bought that shirt too!”
- “I’m going to the store.”
- ‘Irony’ doesn’t mean what you think it means. It has to be situational, verbal, or dramatic.
- Verbal = sarcasm.
- Dramatic = the audience knows something the character doesn’t. For example, the audience knows that the killer is creeping up on the MC, but the MC doesn’t.
- Situational is when the expected outcome doesn’t happen. You buy a gun to protect yourself, but you end up injured by a gun. Your gun was intended to protect you and instead you were hurt by it.
