Urban fantasy dgm AU where the main cast are ‘monsters’ of sorts!

– Lena is a harpy but also a cheerleader and a popular girl and a straight A student who is constantly under a lot of stress because if the spells used to hide her wings and hen-like feet become ineffective even for a moment, it all can crumble down.

– Kanda is a vampire and probably the main reason why he’s hiding the fact that he’s non-human is not that he might be treated like a freak and bullied (like anyone would try to bully Kanda), no. What stops him is the knowledge that if he were to ‘come out’ as a vampire, he’d have to deal with deluded by the media teen and tween girls until the end of his (theoretically) endless life.

– He also hates the sun lots. How dare that giant glowy orb try to burn him. HoW DArE IT! he uses more sun protection cream than any other being on earth, but still gets pretty bad burns. Lavi often makes jokes about it. Kanda doesn’t think it’s funny.

– Lavi and the entire Bookman clan are mages, so Lavi’s the one doing Lena’s illusion spells and providing Kanda with substitutes for blood.

– Allen is a werewolf, (a mutt) and also the cutest and most playful dog ever. He’d never admit it, but even in his human form, he loves to be petted.Since he’s lived in the streets at one point himself, he often pities street dogs and brings them food. All the local packs know him so you better not fuck with this kid, he has an army. 

– Also probably works as a dog walker in his free time (Allen Walker the Dog Walker: Not just a worker, but your dog’s new best pal!).

– Lena’s room, contrary to what one might expect from a girl like her, is ‘an artistic mess’ and greatly resembles a nest: there are photos of people who’re important to her everywhere. Her bed is usually empty, because she prefers to sleep in a pile of blankets and pillows (many many frilly pillows) on the floor. This is also a way for her to feel comfortable and safe when she’s feeling down.

– Komui, like Lena, is a harpy (are male harpies a thing? they must be!) though he can’t fly because when Lena was very young, Honster Hunters kidnapped her and killed their parents, damaging one of Komui’s wings and leaving him disabled for life when he tried to resist. It all happened on a stormy night, and although Lena can’t consciously remember much, it resulted in her being scared of storms for most of her childhood.

– So after Lena was kidnapped, she was sent to Europe and rescued by monsters’ rights activists. They took her to Tiedoll’s shelter, where she met Kanda. The two of them grew close over the time she spent there and Kanda, in his own way, helped her more or less overcome her fear of storms and other negative effects the whole kidnapping deal had had on her. Later, Komui moved to the same city to be with his sister but Lena still visits Kanda, Marie and the other friends she made at the shelter from time to time.

– She, Allen and Kanda attend the same high school and no, Kanda’s not one of those vampire weirdos who collect graduation hats (why the heck would you do that?), it’s just that he never got a formal education and was more or less forced into finally attending school. 

– Komui starts helping out at the shelter at one point. Also, a hobby of his is designing and constructing model airplanes and other flying machines because he still remembers the feelings of freedom and euphoria one gets from flying and wants to give this opportunity to humans and non-flying species as well. 
  
– Allen doesn’t know when and how exactly he got infected and became a werewolf. It could have happened anywhere between the time he ran away from the orphanage and the day Mana adopted him. What matters is that one day he woke up with blood on his hands, his clothes torn and the taste of raw meat lingering in his mouth…

– He’s the one of the group who has yet to come on terms with his ‘oddities’ when he meets the others. Full moons are a nightmare, he’s scared to death that he might hurt one of his friends and not even remember the next day, he’s constantly haunted by guilt and the thoughts that he might have already done in the past

– As in this AU Mana’s cause of death is unknown, Allen can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t his fault in the end…

– Like in cannon, the Bookmen’s job is to record history, especially the history of the supernatural. This, however, doesn’t provide an income. So what Lavi and Bookman do for a living is help the monster community with their magic.
For example, by mainge blood substitute potions and sun protection amulets for vampires (they protect them for being burnt to a crisp but don’t really provide with melanin so vampires’ skin is still super sensitive)
or cast illusion spells on ppl with non-human body part for them to be able to blend in human society. Stuff like that.
 
– They own a book- and crafts shop and do all the procedures in the backroom. Then again, that’s all they do. Despite having great magical power, the Bookman clan would never join a riot, a demonstration or a war, no matter the goal or how dire the situation is. 

– There are two types of Monster Hunters – one are mostly government-led organizations that kill off/put under arrest monsters who have been causing trouble. the other serve more like human traffickers, except, like, monster traffickers. Although really, the border between one and the other is thinner than it appears (the monsters the government wants hunted down are not always criminally convicted and no one really knows or cares what happens to them once they’re caught…)

– lenalee, lavi, and kanda spending the full moon with allen so he isn’t lonely when it happens

-lenalee accidentally finding out allen likes to be petted and petting him at any and all opportunities and allen blUSHING BC WOW. SHE’S SO NICE. but also it feels rly rly good.

-ALLEN TAKING THEM TO DOG PARKS AND LENALEE AND LAVI GASPING IN DELIGHT AS ALL THE EXCITED PUPPIES SWARM THEM

-lenalee being super self conscious about how she looks normally as a harpy and when she goes to the bookmen’s shop to get her illusion spells done lavi v casually telling her how cool she looks and how it’s a shame that she’s gotta hide them and she’s always telling him to stop trying to butter her up but tbh she thinks it’s sweet

-kanda being that one friend who offers to kill anyone who’s been bugging his friends and lenalee’s always like nono don’t be silly like she’d never actually expect him to but allen is like 100% certain he’s being serious bc he bares his fangs whenever he offers

-LENALEE FLYING HER FRIENDS AROUND AN EMPTY PARK IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT
