Lavi nodded when Allen bid him to fetch something for his headache, though it occurred to him that he didn’t see it. “I’ll be right back, ‘kay? Don’t doze back off on me now.”

He was quick to slip out the room and down the stairs in search of whatever small store he could get the pills from. Luck was with him when he found a small bottle of such pills not two minutes from the inn, alongside some lavender oil that would hopefully help to ease his headache. He made it back to the room in less than ten minutes with the pills, oil and a glass of water.

“Was that fast enough for ya, Al?” Lavi asked, sitting back down on the bed next to him. He plopped one of the pills out of the bottle and into his hand before offering it and the glass to Allen. “I got ya a pain killer. Gonna rub some lavender oil on yer head, too. Old man always told me that was great for headaches.”

Allen grimaced as he opened his eyes, and sat up to take the pill and water from Lavi. He swallowed the pill, and sipped at the water as he tried to ignore how his head was spinning.

“’Kay.” he replied quietly. If Bookman had said it worked, Allen was hopeful that it would help.

Lavi grimaced at Allen’s declaration. His head hurt. Lavi hadn’t expected the pain to fade over a few hours—quite the opposite, he’d been certain it would still be there in some amount—but it still worried him.

He sat on the edge of the bed, reached down and massaged his temples with a gentle touch, doing what he could in that second to ease his friend’s pain. “Ya want me ta get ya some medicine?” Lavi asked, voice quiet.

A hundred scenarios ran in his head. Dehydration would trigger a headache. A drop in blood sugar might, too. As much as he hated to admit it, though, it was more likely a concussion. That left aspirin out of the question. “Maybe I can find some lavender oil around here…” Lavi muttered more to himself than the one suffering on the bed.

The fingers pressing against his temples did help a bit, and Allen didn’t want Lavi to leave him here alone. But, he knew the fastest way to feel better was to let Lavi go get him medicine.

“Yes… please.” Allen said, his voice nearly a whisper.

The sound of his name made him jump; it nearly sent the book on his lap tumbling to the ground. But he’d pulled himself from his seat, tossed the book onto his bed without bothering to save his spot and was at Allen’s bedside not thirty seconds later.

“Hey, bud,” he said quietly, looking the boy over. Damn, he looked out of it, like he’d been slapped with a nasty headache—which could be mean he had more than just a concussion, but Lavi had to hold onto the hope that that wasn’t the case. Even a concussion could be risky. “You feelin’ okay? Need anythin’?”

“Head hurts…” He wasn’t sure what Lavi could do about it, but he wanted the headache to stop.

When Allen turned over to go back to sleep, Lavi continued tracing
small circles in his back until the boy’s breathing evened out. He fell
asleep and once he had, Lavi followed shortly. After eating what he’d gotten for himself and throwing out any leftovers, he pulled off his boots and flopped down on his own bed to doze for a few hours. Sleeping lightly, the evening disappeared in favor of night. Lavi was up and down until the early hours of the morning, checking up on his friend, making sure he didn’t have a fever or that his wounds didn’t need to be redressed.

It wasn’t until the sun peaked over the horizon that Lavi finally settled down near the window with a book, the worry he had for his friend who continued to sleep peacefully overriding his own need to do so.

If he doesn’t wake up soon, I’ll see about finding a doctor in the area, Lavi thought to himself, having to read each page twice to properly digest what was on the page.

Allen slowly became aware of his surroundings, a headache forcing him to consciousness no matter how much he tried to cling to sleep. His mind felt muddled, and he wondered how he could feel cloudy and painful and nauseous at once. He didn’t want to move, or open his eyes, but he knew he was not going to get back to sleep easily.

He heard the sound of pages turning, which was oddly comforting. It took him a few moments to remember that the sound meant Lavi was there.

“Lavi.” he called out quietly, his voice sounding strained.

Lavi chuckled as Allen was quick to finish the pudding. He was glad he got something into his system, at least, even if Lavi knew it wasn’t anywhere near enough.

“A promise is a promise,” Lavi said as he took the bowl from Allen and set it on the nightstand. “Roll over on yer side an’ I’ll keep doodlin’.”

Allen lay on his side quickly, making himself comfortable so he could go to sleep.

When Allen inquired, Lavi gave him his answer. He reached around to Allen’s back and with his finger, traced nameless shapes on his back with a featherlight touch.

“When Gramps first took me as his apprentice, I had a hard time sleepin’. I mean, that kinda goes without sayin’. One day I’m just hungry and a few days later, seein’ people kill each other is gettin’ pretty normal,” Lavi said, confiding in Allen a story he didn’t think anyone but he and the old man knew. “Tha’s what he did to get me to sleep. I always thought it was relaxin’.”

Allen jumped when Lavi touched his back, but relaxed after a moment.

“Yea… it is relaxing.” he said, not sure how to react do the rest of what Lavi had said. He continued eating the pudding and soon finished it.

“Can I sleep now?” he asked, holding the bowl towards Lavi.

When Allen opened his mouth to receive more of the pudding, Lavi fed him another bite before handing the goods off to him.

“Yup! If ya eat all yer puddin’, I’ll let ya sleep,” Lavi said with a smile, crossing his arms and leaning up against the edge of the bed. “I’ll even give ya dozy doodles, if ya want.”

“Whatever that is…?” Allen said slowly. He was pretty tired, but he didnt think he ever heard of that before. Maybe a local food?

He picked at the pudding slowly. He wanted to go to sleep, but at the same time he didn’t really want to eat any of the pudding. It was actually a new feeling, not being hungry… but he blamed it on the exhaustion.

“C’mon, Al, don’t be so difficult,” Lavi said in response to him trying to push his hand away and the glare he shot him with tired eyes. And when he opened his mouth to speak, in went the spoon. Allen damn near choked on, but that didn’t stop the triumphant smirk that spread across his face.

“See? It’s good! C’mon, ‘Sprout,” Lavi said, taking another spoonful of the pudding to try and coax his mouth open. “I mean, I could forcefeed it to ya mouth-to-mouth if ya really want me to.”

Allen grumbled some more, and briefly considered continuing to resist just to see if Lavi made good on his threat… but he decided it would probably be faster to just eat enough to satisfy Lavi. He opened his mouth to let Lavi feed him another bite, before moving to prop himself into a sitting position at the head of the bed.

“I’m not hungry…” he muttered, but held out his hands for the pudding. “If I just eat it you’ll let me sleep?”

“C’mon, Al. Ya need to at least eat something. You can go back to sleep after, I promise,” Lavi said as his hand was swatted away.

Lavi reached up and pinched Allen’s nose, hoping to rouse him from sleep. After all, there were risks to him sleeping with his mouth open—like drooling. Could Allen Walker live it down if he woke up and found his face coated in his own drool?

“I brought you puddin’. Here,” he said, taking a spoonful of pudding and holding it up to Allen’s lips.

Allen made a few more pathetic sounding noises as he tried to push Lavis hand away, before opening his eyes to give Lavi a sleepy glare.

“Don’t want-” he started, but sputtered when some of the pudding was dropped into his mouth. He managed to swallow it without choking, but clamped his lips shut.

Allen barely responded to him and a smile tugged at Lavi’s lips as he watched him drift off to sleep while Lavi tended to his wounds. He cleaned up every scratch, looked over ever bruise, bandaged every gash to keep it from getting dirty.

When he finished, it occured to him that Allen wasn’t really that bad off. The small gash on his head was the worst of it and while alarming, he didn’t it needed to be fretted over much. With a sigh, he leaned down and pulled Allen’s boots off, lifting his legs and pushing them beneath the covers that he then pulled up to the boy’s chin.

It was about that time that his stomach decided to protest against further action. A glance back at Allen told him the boy wouldn’t be awake for a little while longer and he departed with that thought in mind, hoping to find something for himself and maybe something that would get Allen out of bed for five minutes.

Even if he went back to sleep afterwards, he really did need to eat something at least—and Lavi was plenty happy to go get him more.

He hopped to and from each of the individual resteraunts and shops. He picked one close by—so the food wouldn’t go cold—and ended up choosing Rouladen. He even picked up some Welf Pudding for Allen before heading back to the inn.

When he arrived, the boy was still asleep. He set the goods down on the end table that separated their two before leaning on the bed with one knee and towering over his friend. “Al,” he called softly, patting him on his face lightly, avoiding the bandage that covered the gash on the side of his head. “Come on, wake up. I brought pudding.”

If this were Japan—or there was a half-decent Japanese resteraunt here—he would’ve brought back dango for the boy, but that wasn’t to be the case.

Allen mumbled as he shifted, slowly waking up. He raised a hand to push at whatever was patting his face, but it returned just moments later. He heard a voice calling him, and he opened his eyes just enough to give a sleepy glare at whoever was waking him up. He realized it was Lavi, hovering above him, and saying something about… pudding? Why was Lavi waking him up about pudding? He was still exhausted, he didn’t want to eat…

“Nooo… sleep…” he groaned, pushing away Lavi’s hand from his face again.
