something i wanted to add about that revelation neah makes about tyki maybe not looking the same as when he was born,
in the discussion room for volume 24, wisely mentions that the noah are reborn at the cellular level when they awaken:
(that’s the official translation so hopefully it’s accurate)
so i think the point that tyki’s appearance changed was specifically when he awoke as a noah. he could’ve looked like anyone, and the noah memory chose to make him look like neah/the earl. but why?
I know I typically only post Magi on here but I’m a huge lover of D.Gray-Man. It’s a bit harder to translate just because of the style of writing used so I won’t be doing direct translations. However, here’s a chapter summary! I put (?) at places I wasn’t sure and each paragraph is a page.
The chapter opens with Nea looking down at Tyki and he’s shocked at his face.
Behind Tyki, Wisely is taking the Earl back through the ark. Wisely tells him to not stay too long since the twins have captured Apocryphos and are holding it. Tyki then tells Wisely that when they get back, he’ll have to explain who Mana is and that he couldn’t learn anything from Bookman since he had to go help.
We get a shot of Lavi looking very injured and Bookman looking conflicted. Wisely says that even if Tyki (he refers to him as Joyd when talking to him) asks, he doesn’t know anything. Wisely starts thinking about 35 years ago, something along the lines of ‘The fate of you and Nea…’
The gate pulls them down and the Earl reaches out towards Nea.
Nea reaches back, smiling, as the gate pulls them down.
Tyki turns his attention to Nea, saying it’s confusing when Nea has Allen’s face. He says that he’s happy to finally meet him the 14th.
Tyki goes on to say that the Millennium Earl cried for him and that Wisely was bad for getting out of explaining(?) But he then offers for Nea to come home with him, calling him ‘Whatever you are’.
Tyki says that family should be together and eat together and that Nea can take his time explaining everything but Tyki calls him the ‘Traitorous 14th’ and Nea doesn’t look pleased.
We cut to where Link is fighting Feedra and uses binding feathers on him.
Link kicks Feedra back and uses a spell that throws a knife (or kunai looking thing) into Feedra’s stomach.
It electrocutes Feedra who complains about being in pain and says that he just wants to go home so he can snack. Link wonders where the other Noah are.
Link looks over and sees Nea about to activate Crown Clown. He seems shocked while Tyki seems amused.
Tyki thinks it isn’t possible for a Noah to use Innocence and that Nea is forcing activation. Nea says that he knows they think he’s being careless. He says something along the lines of being able to use Innocence (and hints at other Noah using innocence) in the previous regeneration which earned him a nickname that roughly translates to ‘Disagreeable’. Nea says that he still doesn’t like Innocence though. Tyki says ‘Is that so?’ and doesn’t seem so impressed. Nea says Tyki is disqualified. He says there are some called accommodators and others called inspectors but those are disqualified as well. Nea introduces himself and tells Tyki to remember his name well. Nea says that who Tyki thinks of as accommodators and who he thinks of as family are Nea’s decision.
Nea says ‘It’s impossible for my to eat with you, Joyd.’ and he smiles wide. He says that Tyki’s appearance makes him laugh but it makes him feel like he’s going to be sick.
Tyki wonders what Nea meant and the words ‘I’m going to be sick.’ are shown in quotes. Tyki’s inner Noah is shown grinning.
Tyki grabs his face, like he’s going to lose control. Link calls out to Nea, telling him to stop and that Crown Clown is Allen’s Innocence. He says Innocence may not necessarily destroy Noah but he’s still considered evil (which Crown Clown destroys).
Nea thanks him for his concern. Feedra is shown wondering what’s going on (?). Tyki says that if Nea is going to activate it, he should do it seriously. Link calls him a fool and shoots Binding Feathers out.
Someone says Allen’s name and Nea and Link both stop.
Johny has woken up and looks out at the fight.
The tag falls off Johny’s face and he calls Allen’s name again. Nea just stares at him in shock.
Johny looks confused and Link thinks that he forgot his Feathers must have deactivated from his fight with the other Noah. Johny sees that Allen’s eyes are gold like a Noah’s but he’s still Allen.
Allen is shown breaking through and reaches out to Johny, calling his name.
Allen is shown in the field again, reaching out to the light and thinking about the words Cross said about finding his light that will act as his signpost. Allen is falling but finally waking up in the real world (I guess they were on a rooftop the whole time?)
Allen is falling off the building and Johny shouts his name.
Both Tyki and Link look like they’re about to move but Johny jumps off the building, reaching out for Allen.
Falling Johny calling out for Allen again.
More falling Johny calling out for Allen.
Johny’s hands appear around Allen’s Innocence hand (like an illusion).
Crown Clown activates but it’s huge angel wings.
The wings grab Johny who is blinded by them.
Clown Belt shoots up, anchoring to the building to soften their fall.
Allen lands on the ground on his feet with Johny, smiling at him. He says that Johny let him get away from him (remember the handcuffs?) and being part of the science team isn’t so bad (?).
Johny tears up and hugs him, saying that that’s because it’s the science team (?) Link is then shown standing on the roof, with Binding Feathers around him. The caption says something like Johny’s words reach Allen but the Inspector watches…
So I am rewatching anime with my mother (I am kinda dragging her into DGM hell as well whoops) and I was just watching the Matel episode. I realized a few details there and checked the manga- indeed there they are.
The top of his innocence and some parts indeed give a cloak form Crown Clown vibe, so I am wondering if that was a sort of preview detail/hint for %100 syncronization version.
Also, the “murderous rage” part bugs me because it is translated as “murderous aura” in anime and VIZ media translation says “Blood thirsty malice” so I checked the raw:
なんて禍々しい殺気を放つんだあいつ
武器がその姿を形にしているような
magamagashii satsuki.
It would be something more like ominous/sinister bloodlust/blood thirst. (if you have any better translation for magamagashii, be my guest. But satsuki, especially with this kanji translates to bloodthirst on any source I could find. Murderous is synonym with it, yeah, but when it is translated as “murderous rage”, it loses some meaning in the context. So VIZ Media translation is accurate one on that one.)
Why I am noting this?
Because we always see Neah being noted as the one giving a blood thirsty aura in manga. Any time Allen has anything to do with him: be it Sword of Exorcism appearing (Road notes it feels like the time Neah tried to kill them/instantly remembers that instance from the vibe of bloodlust Allen gives) to Link noting that he gives far too much blood thirsty aura to be Walker.
So we probably had our first hint of Neah (and possibly cloak form/the form of Crown Clown seen on Neah on a page cover when we were introduced to 14th) on Night 14.
I will try to look more into it, but this is one small thing I caught.
Bonus: This also supports that Neah is somehow connected/has some history with Crown Clown theories, which I might make another post about. It is pretty interesting thing, really.
Edit: I am a bit slow to actually realize that we had first hint of the14th on the 14th Night. Gdi Hoshino.
