kids dealing with shit
The nuclear family is probably the greatest enabler of child abuse, ever.
Putting two people in complete control of another person (who is particularly vulnerable and has few legal rights) and then having no oversight for the whole arrangement is the absolute worst idea.
Families are garbage.
Hahaha wtf
I wouldn’t even know where to start with this. omg.
OP, what would you propose as an alternative to families?
communal child raising
less isolated familial structures in general
children being made aware of how they should and shouldn’t be treated
Some form of child protection services that don’t just believe the parents and assume a child is lying when they report abuse
more legal and counselling services made available to children
I don’t get people that are like “lol, what? that’s so weird, lets laugh at the very notion that traditional families are abusive”.
communal child raising is the traditional family. 70-100 years ago 4 generations lived together in the same house, having 4 grandparents, 6 aunts and 15 cousins around every day was normal.
Things that should be mentioned:
– These communities are not necessarily connected by an biological ties. In a lot of these multigenerational ‘families’, including people in the family who are not relatives or married into the family is totally normal. This has always created a lot more space to support people without families, support people who do now want to partner up and to create communities in which couples who can not have children (like some queer couples but not all & other couples too) can be a part of child raising.
– Having a lot more young people around often means young people learn from each other. In many cultures young people form a non-hierarchial group that learns together and can do a great deal without adult supervision.
The nuclear family doesn’t just facilitate abuse, it facilitates hierarchy. It’s a training school for obedience to authority.
Now, which system would push such a training school strongly so it could get docile obedient citizens? Which system whould push the nuclear family.
I’m not saying it’s capitalism but it’s capitalism. And then there’s the fact that the 2 parent, nuclear family can be most easily pushed into the pattern where one adult works an extremely exhausting job many hours a day that leaves that adult hardly capable of doing anything else, while the other adult takes on all the other things that adult would otherwise have done: care for children, clean the living space, prepare food, prepare clean clothing, etc. for free. What we know as traditional gender roles.
This way capitalism gets one intensely loyal worker who feels ‘responsible’ for ‘supporting a family’ while all the work to keep that worker going is done for free by an unpaid worker in the home.
And, you know, communities need a lot less stuff. A community of 50 can do just fine with one or two hammers. 25 nuclear families need 25 hammers. The nuclear family demands a huge amount of commodity purchasing.
I mean, I’m not trying to say this is a white people thing, but this is a white people thing.
True!
The advent of the nuclear family was largely enabled by all those cheap mortgages that gave us the suburbs. If everyone in the traditional communal family could AFFORD their own house, then why SHOULDN’T they all have their own house? (At least that’s what capitalism convinced them of)
But since these cheap mortgages were only available to white people because of racist policies, then only white people could afford those white picket fences in the suburbs. While other races retained their traditional family structures (with white people looking down on and openly mocking their way of life), white people became convinced that the nuclear family was the ONLY proper way for a family to function.
So the children suffered because they were more isolated than ever, and the adults suffered because they were suddenly doing work that used to be spread out between many people.
The nuclear family is bad for everyone involved and us white people brought this down upon ourselves and it’s time we admitted it and start fixing it.
Some shots I boarded for The Battle of Mewni: Toffee!
1) Star’s wand design wasn’t finalized until after boards.
2) Star’s transformation sequence was half Sailor Moon Crystal (the later seasons, after they stopped using the weird CG models) and half Digimon. Basically everything I do is half Digimon??
3) Since we don’t get much time with poor Toffee, I wanted to at least give him a nice big send off. By which I mean brutally murdering him, including several juicy close-up shots to show the flesh ripping off his body.
4) Those close-ups originally looked fleshier–you could see the skeleton coming apart underneath the skin. I toned it down, but you can still kinda see his skeleton in the final shot there.
It’s interesting to me that everyone wants to right allen mana make up stories. I mean I get it we want to see allen happy and him with his dad so they can live a *relatively* normal life. But in honesty this I’d probably impossible. I’m not saying this because it’s impossible that the earl is really mana in there. I’m saying it because if he is, he won’t be the mana allen knew.
The mana allen knew, mana walker, was broken. He was mentally not all the way there, thought allen was a dog, and was generally suicidal and lost. Even if this could be brought back, it would be inhumane. It would be cruel to keep mana in such a state. On the off chance we got mana back with only his memories of being mana campbell and some from being mana walker, the best possible scenario for allen, we can’t guarantee what so ever that mana would love allen, let alone love him more than nea. Even if he DID love allen, genuinly as his son which isn’t that far of a stretch, he STILL would likely choose nea over allen. It would kill him to do it inside, but he’d probably still do it. Worse in this circumstance he could see the time he spent with allen as some nightmare fever dream he spent running from the earl and would want nothing to do with allen because of the stress.
And this is all if mana didn’t remeber the past 7000 years he’d been alive as adam. I mean I know real world science doesn’t matter but in cases of people with amnesia, even if they developed a full personality in the years without memories different than their old one, the new memories are completely over taken by the old in all cases it’s been studied where patients regained them. That means if mana remebered all those years, “mana” as we know him would be swept away almost competent except for a hand full of memories.
Even if we don’t use real world science though, the odds 7000 years of experience and personality development are going to be overridden by a mear 40, considering all the trauma that 7000 surely held, would be so incredibly unlikely you’d have a better chance of being struck by lightning on the moon.
Bottom line, correct or not, I’m actually incredibly sad to say that even if mana could come back, he wouldn’t be the mana allen knew, or wouldn’t be mana at all even with the memories intacact. And mind you this all only I’d the earl right now is actually completely 100% mana and nothing else, which is at the very least debatable if not unlikely.
If you scratch my cat in the right spot, he’ll flick his tongue out and lick whatever is close by
when I heard that comment I just exploded inside and put it all on this comic.
Watching Nea twist Allen’s face like this is really making me cringe because Allen would never have an expression like Nea does and I’m super impressed that Hoshino manages to convey this.
