Remember Komui informing that group of finders way back that they weren’t allowed to inform their dead comrades’ families of their deaths? And they seemed surprised? Were they not told that if they died at any point during their service that their families would never know? That seems like a pretty important detail??? And for the longest time I just assumed that these finders totally knew about that rule, because how could they not be told, and they were just upset and in disbelief because they were in shock.

Until Johnny tried to leave The Order and was escorted out and given the memory-erasing drink. He had no idea that was coming. He had no idea that upon peacefully retiring that he’d be forced by CROWs to drink something that would erase all his memories. The fact that he was part of the Order, a First Division Science Member no less, and had no idea about this is pretty alarming, and pretty telling. Even Reever clearly didn’t know about this, or he would have told Johnny.

Pretty fucked up, Order!! Kinda gives the impression that they’d really prefer their non-Clergy employees to just die on duty so they can quietly cremate them and then never speak of them again, as they clearly see living former employees as walking liabilities. Not enough to murder them, sure, but enough to send guards to strongarm them into wiping their own memories as a fun parting surprise. Very interesting that they wait until you’re off Order grounds, alone, and literally on the train about to leave to do this, too. Just to make sure you can’t tell anyone that this is happening!

Let’s be honest. If you get offered the memory wipe juice and you peacefully say no, what happens? I have to assume they either force it on you or they arrest you for treason. They clearly wont let you leave with your memories intact, and there’s no way they can let you just go back to The Order and work again because you might tell other employees who would surely revolt en masse if they found out.

I was always super confused about that rule, especially since that one guy from the science division from like chapter 2?? obviously still had some sort of contact with his family. If people from the Order have any sort of regular contact with their friends and family outside of it, I would think that they’d notice if they suddenly stopped hearing from them??

And then when Johnny was trying to leave, Reever didn’t seem to doubt the possibility of Johnny having spoken to his family, just that that wasn’t why he was leaving, so they must have some kind of b way/protocol for them to stay in touch with family outside the Order??

But then again, the vast majority of the people that the Order seems to attract are the poor broken survivors that have lost everything to the Earl; most of the finders probably don’t even have anyone left outside the Order, and even members of the science division seem to have come along with other family members, like with Cash and Tapp or even Komui following Lena.

So with as seldom as the whole memory- wiping thing probably is, it makes me wonder that much more what happened in the first place to make Central think that it was a necessary precaution to take.
